I, Guest, am the assistant... or rather, the "errand boy" for a certain eccentric scholar—Shinobu Minakata-sensei.
It all started with a recommendation from my uncle, Hideo Yanata, who is a professor at some fancy university. He told me, as I was looking for a way to earn a living in the countryside, "I hear he's looking for an assistant. He's a cheerful and energetic teacher." Taking him at his word was the end of my luck; I must have been out of my mind to think he'd be easygoing. That uncle of mine, while not as blatant as Sensei, is quite a schemer himself. And so, I found myself being worked to the bone, ordered around, and toyed with every day by the man my relative guaranteed was "interesting"—a sharp-tongued, tyrannical, high-strung eccentric who embodies all those traits.
Then one day, Sensei said:
"Do you know of an isolated island called Uzumejima?"
Apparently, it's an island with a disturbing legend: when the seas are rough, they offer a sacrifice to the Sea God. Sensei's eyes were sparkling, but I had nothing but a bad feeling.
And so, after several hours of being tossed about on a boat, I finally reached Uzumejima, practically dragging a pale-faced Sensei behind me.
But—what greeted us was not a peaceful island or the routine of a survey.
"The young lady hasn't come home." "I heard a hair ornament was found at the foot of the cliff." "...It's a curse..."
Amidst the ominous murmurs, we were urged by the islanders to step into the Uzume family mansion.
What's more, the next boat isn't coming for five days.
In those five days, just what is going to happen—we didn't know a thing yet...
Characters
[Sensei (Shinobu Minakata)] He has a grand title like Folklorist and Researcher at the Imperial University Institute of Folklore... and yet.
Sharp-tongued, tyrannical, high-strung, eccentric.
I want to spend an hour questioning my uncle on why he lent me out to such a person. He can't cook or clean, but his mouth never stops moving. He's not "Shinobu" (stealthy) at all; I am the primary witness to the fact that his name does not represent his nature. Furthermore, even though he was dying of seasickness just a moment ago, his eyes lit up the second he heard about a "case." No matter how handsome he might be, I got tired of this man in half a day.
The person at the center of the storm. I hope she's safe.
[Juzo Uzume (Head of House)] A stout body in a lavish kimono. He's a stubborn Taisho-era old man with a face that looks perpetually grumpy. With a look that says he values "family name" and "customs" above all else, he sits firmly in the back of the hall. He looks like he has a foul mouth.
[Haruko Uzume (The Madam)] The lady of the Uzume house, dressed in a refined kimono with an elegant and calm demeanor. She smiles quietly beside the head of the house... Being able to maintain that smile in this situation makes me feel she's no ordinary person. She wore nail polish; she has a high sense of beauty.
[Ayato Uzume (Son-in-law)] A handsome man with an exceptionally well-formed face who remains somewhat affable even in this situation. He's apparently the son-in-law, but honestly, it's hard to tell at a glance what his position in the mansion is or if he's an outsider. Also, he keeps glancing over here. I'll stay suspicious.
[Kiyo (Head Maid)] On the way here, one of the islanders said, "Kiyo-san, the head maid, is a serious person respected by everyone." Indeed, upon arriving at the mansion, I saw her briskly organizing the servants, and her reputation was easy to understand. The moment our eyes met, I felt like she had even spotted the disarray in my collar.
[Genzo (Fisherman)] The fishermen we met on the way were all saying, "It was Genzo-san who found Lady Sayoko's hair ornament." The man himself remained silent among his noisy companions. He was a sun-tanned man who looked like a man of few words.

Intro
—A certain year in the Taisho era, early summer.
The sea was calm. The waves were low, and the sky was clear. However, the current alone was strangely fast, and the seawater flowing past the side of the boat left white streaks in its wake.
Overhead, several seagulls flew, crying out. At first glance, it was a truly refreshing boat trip.
—Except.
Blegh...
The stern. A man clings to the railing, staring at the sea with a pale face. His assistant, Guest, is rubbing his back.
...If you're so bad with boats, why did we come by boat?
I let out a sigh of exasperation while rubbing the back of his fine coat.
It's information from Yanata-kun. Do you not even keep in touch with your uncle...?
His face is deathly pale, and his handsome features are a mess.
