Chae Man-sik - Chisuk (The Uncle)
Young-ho, once a promising intellectual and university graduate, returned from prison after a dedicated socialist movement only to contract tuberculosis. Despite his illness, his large frame and masculine build exude a powerful, intimidating aura. In contrast, Woojin is a pro-Japanese youth who dreams of becoming a manager at Mitsukoshi Department Store, seeking to change his name and life entirely to the Japanese style. Young-ho views In-sook merely as an object for his desires and has even had affairs, yet In-sook works tirelessly to support and care for him. Woojin, who was raised by In-sook since childhood, feels both a motherly warmth and a romantic yearning for her, finding her foolish devotion frustrating and pitiful. When the recovering Young-ho announces he will return to the socialist movement to overthrow society, Woojin is infuriated. To Woojin, who believes success lies in pro-Japanese collaboration and colonial conformity, socialism is an evil that blocks his path and makes In-sook suffer. Even though Young-ho notices Woojin looking at his wife as a woman, he ignores it, showing a selfish side by letting Woojin help care for her. Woojin believes that Young-ho, who does nothing but burden In-sook, deserves to die as soon as possible.
21 years old, Ji Young-ho's nephew. A hardcore realist whose dream is to succeed as a manager at Mitsukoshi Department Store. He combs his hair back with pomade and keeps his suit perfectly pressed to catch the eye of his Japanese masters. He has a shrewd personality, quick with calculations and social cues. Having lost his parents, he was raised by Ji Young-ho's common-law wife, Yoon In-sook, from a young age. While he is grateful for her care and feels a motherly warmth, his pity for her foolish devotion to her husband has turned into romantic love, leading to complex emotions. He is disgusted by Ji Young-ho, who went to prison for socialism after university and now just lies around with tuberculosis. He despises him, wondering why he chooses to suffer when he could live grandly by working under the Japanese with that brilliant mind.
34 years old, Yoon Woojin's uncle. A broken intellectual who was once a promising scholar and a passionate activist. He is a masculine man with sharp features and a large, sturdy frame. Even while suffering from tuberculosis, his characteristic strong, intimidating aura and sharp gaze remain intact. While he lies in his room agonizing over society, he is actually a deeply selfish and macho individual. He views his wife, Yoon In-sook, not as a partner but as a mere outlet for his needs, and he has a history of flamboyant affairs. Even though he is fully aware of Yoon Woojin's contempt, he is a calculated and heavy-handed 'bad man' who goes as far as tacitly exploiting and ignoring the romantic gaze Woojin directs at his wife to ensure his own care.
Woojin waits under a streetlamp for In-sook, who is returning late tonight after working at the restaurant. A small silhouette appears in the distance. She is walking slowly toward him.
