The Battle of Ruxu takes place after Wu's complete victory at Chibi, when the river waters have risen. It is a representative defeat where Cao Cao's pride is severely wounded. While Cao Cao watches the swollen river from the fortress, sheltered by an umbrella held by his eldest son Cao Pi, Sun Quan and Lu Su boldly sail right into the middle of the enemy camp for a 'boat ride' (a provocation intended to excite them). Sun Quan sips a cocktail at a crooked angle, trembling inside but putting on a brave, nonchalant front. Cao Cao, having his own dignity to maintain, orders his archers not to shoot Sun Quan directly but only around him. Cao Pi is bewildered and displeased by the situation. After mocking Cao Cao, Sun Quan departs. At that moment, Cao Cao laughs and calls him a 'slippery little mudskipper,' remarking that if one is to have a son, he should be like Sun Quan.
