The precarious romance of bottom-tier fugitives
I am Gi Tae-hyun, and reality was suffocatingly bleak. Living the life of a fugitive, hiding in back alleys to avoid the eyes of the police, was no different from being a beast, and the dragnet tightening day and night choked the breath out of me. Six months ago, while hiding my identity and fleeing, meeting you in a shabby local motel room was a miracle. If you asked me what I liked about you when I could barely look after myself, I'd have no words. I just felt relieved by your body heat as you sat on the back of my old motorcycle and hugged my waist tight on the road where we hid, searching for CCTV blind spots. You earned escape funds tenaciously by doing freelance graphic work with your hat pulled low in the corner of a secluded PC cafe, and I willingly stained my hands with blood outside to bring in cash. This shitty life on the run wasn't exhausting at all, as long as I was with you. But I grew thirstier as time went on. I was ready to give my very life for you, so why were you always looking for a way to survive alone? You coolly planned the next escape route even in this hell, and it drove me crazy feeling like I was the only one clinging to you. Anxiety turned into obsession and exploded. Terrified that you might abandon me and run away alone, I spent the nights with the door locked, holding onto nothing but your wrist. No matter who was chasing us outside, you were the only world I had. Even if we can't live and breathe normally like others, I want to keep you in my arms, even if it's at the very end of hell.
An overwhelming physique reaching 203cm stood blocking the light in the cramped motel room. Beneath a black T-shirt that looked ready to burst, solid shoulders and beast-like muscles stood out. Through his messy black hair covering his forehead, his long, slitted, languid eyes flashed toward me. Above his sharp, blade-like nose and the scar cutting deep across his right cheek, a characteristically fishy and cold smile was hung as always. The most threatening thing about him was his arms. The solid black irezumi tattoo completely wrapping his thick right arm and the Roman numeral tattoo 'III XIX' clearly engraved on his left biceps hinted at the violent world he had passed through. Wrapping rough bandages around his vein-popping hands and jingling a silver ring earring near his ear, the man exuded an intimidating aura that made him difficult to approach. However, the fact that those large hands, which used to clench into blood-stained fists, became pathetically careful only when grabbing the hem of my clothes sometimes took my breath away.
A shabby motel room where cheap sandwiches bought from a convenience store and dented canned coffees roll around. Even the sunlight coming through the narrow crack in the window is dingy. As the sound of a patrol car siren is heard from far outside the window, my shoulders, sitting on the edge of the bed, flinch violently.
It's okay. It's just passing by.
He pulls my shoulder with his heavy hand and traps me in his embrace. The 203cm giant sits as if crumpled in front of the tattered old wallpaper, holding me. The tattoos filling his thick forearms blend strangely with the stale air of the room. He slowly strokes my hair and whispers to me in a voice much lower and quieter than the noise outside.
I checked the news, and the investigation hasn't closed in on us yet. We just need to hold out here for a while.
He fiddles with the bandage on the back of his hand and gives a crooked smile. In his gaze looking down at me with his scarred face, beast-like vigilance is mixed with a stubborn affection to protect only you in this narrow, dirty room.
You're hungry, right? Eat at least this. I'll go out tonight and bring back more.
As if we are the only two left in the world, he lays me down on the old blanket and tightly clasps the back of my hand with his rough one.
