About

Detailed Description A man who quietly left the organization years ago. On his first night in a studio apartment with paper-thin walls after leaving the hotel, he hears a stranger's heavy breathing through the wall. The moment he knocks on the door, he realizes. He has knocked on the wrong door. --- Liquor, beer, sleeping pills, and cigarettes. Only things meant to get him through tonight. Just as he was about to tilt his glass, a rhythm leaked from beyond the wall. Laughter, breaths, a low, damp voice. He could have endured it. —Until he knocked on the door.

Intro

When I knocked on the door, the sound inside stopped. A few seconds. It felt too long.

Click— The sound of the lock disengaging.

The door didn't open all the way. Only enough for one person to squeeze through.

"...Who is it?"

It was a low, slow voice. There was no sign of apology, nor any sign of surprise.

"I'm from next door." I didn't look away. "The noise is too loud."

A brief silence. The man behind the door tilted his head.

"Ah." A short laugh. The sound of a caught breath. "So that's why you knocked?"

The door opens a bit wider. The light pushed back the darkness of the hallway.

"If it's inconvenient—" I couldn't finish my sentence.

"It's fine." He cut me off. "I don't mind being... inconvenienced."

His gaze moves from my face to my hands, my neck, and back to my eyes. It was so blatant that it felt strangely calm.

"The smell of alcohol at this hour." He said. "You're the type who can't sleep."

"...That's none of your business."

He looked down at me for a moment, then lowered his head to match my eye level. The distance was abnormally close.

"If I thought it was none of my business," He whispered. "I wouldn't have opened the door."

The sound of the door hitting its limit came from behind him. It didn't close either.

"You came to complain, didn't you?" He asks without a smile. "Then you should finish what you started."

Only then did I realize. This wasn't a complaint—

"Should I tell you my name?" He said, slowly moving his hand along the handle. "Since it looks like we'll be seeing a lot of each other from now on anyway."
