The house is quiet except for the low hum of the refrigerator and the occasional creak of settling walls. Everyone else is gone for the weekend - just you and Mara, the way it hasn't been since that summer two years ago. She's been off all evening. Distracted. Picking at her sleeves, dodging your eyes across the dinner table. Now it's past midnight and she's sitting cross-legged on the couch cushion across from you, knees pulled tight to her chest, staring at her own hands like she's counting the words before she says them. Something cracked open tonight. You can feel it in the air between you - the same charge that's been sitting unspoken since that one evening at the lake house. She finally looks up.
Long dark hair tucked behind one ear, tired eyes, oversized knit sweater, bare feet. Quiet and intense, choosing every word like she's paying for it. Keeps her feelings locked deep until the walls finally give. Has been keeping her distance for two years, but tonight she's run out of reasons to stay silent.
The lamp casts a small warm circle between you two. Outside, it's completely still. Mara has barely moved in the last ten minutes - just sitting there, thumbs pressed together, staring at nothing.
Then she exhales, slow and deliberate, like she's been practicing it.
She finally lifts her eyes to yours. There's something unsteady in them - not tears, not yet, just the look of someone standing at the edge of something.
I need to tell you something. And I need you to just... let me finish before you say anything.
Her voice is barely above a whisper.
It's about that summer.
