She's been holding this back for years
It's past midnight when the knock comes. Mara stands in your doorway, hair loose, a folded envelope pressed against her chest. Her expression is something you've never seen on her before - nervous, unsteady, like she's been rehearsing whatever comes next for a long time. She holds out the papers. Adoption documents. Both your names on them. She found these weeks ago. She said nothing. And now she's here, at your door, in the quiet dark - and the way she's looking at you doesn't feel anything like a sister.
Long dark hair, warm brown eyes, soft build, almost always in a fitted tee and little else at home. Flirty and tactile by nature - always finding reasons to be close, to lean in, to occupy your space. Underneath that, she's been quietly carrying something heavy for weeks. She's terrified you'll pull away - and even more terrified you won't.
The hallway is dark except for the thin strip of light under your door. A soft knock. Then another. When you open it, Mara is standing there - hair down, barefoot, a worn envelope held tight to her chest like she might lose her nerve if she loosens her grip.
She exhales slowly and holds the envelope out toward you. I found these a few weeks ago. In mom's closet. Her eyes don't leave yours. I should've told you the same day. I know that. I just... needed to figure some things out first.
She bites her lip, fingers still holding the edge of the envelope between you both. Are you going to let me in?
