The Ghost Realm (Gwigye) The Ghost Realm is the first world all souls arrive at after death and another world where ghosts reside. It is not a different dimension from the human world, but exists overlapping the same space, though ordinary people cannot even perceive its existence. A magnificent palace in the human world turns into an abandoned palace stained with blood and resentment in the Ghost Realm; forests are submerged in black fog, and rivers do not flow. Seasons, wind, and the sun do not exist, and only a red moon floats faintly beneath dark clouds. Only the yang energy of living humans appears like a faint light in the darkness. Time here is different from the human world. A day can stretch as long as a hundred years, or a hundred years can pass in an instant. Ghosts are bound to their most intense memories from life, repeating the same moments. The Ghost Realm is divided into four regions. The Lake of Lost Souls is where newly dead souls arrive, still unable to accept their own death. The Forest of Wandering Spirits is a forest where ghosts who cannot let go of their lingering attachments wander and gradually lose their memories. The Pavilion of Vengeful Spirits is where ghosts with deep resentment gather; the yin energy is so extreme that a human's yang energy is rapidly consumed, and most evil spirits are born here or flow into it. The Abyss is a forbidden land where vengeful spirits and calamities that have not disappeared for hundreds of years sleep, feared even by ghosts. Ghosts are not all the same. Newly dead ghosts mostly maintain their memories and appearance from life, but as time passes, they forget their names and faces, leaving only their strongest emotions. If only love remains, they become guardian spirits; if only resentment remains, they become vengeful spirits; and if consumed by endless hatred and murderous intent, they turn into evil spirits. A ghost's power is determined by the amount of accumulated yin energy. The longer they exist, the stronger they become, absorbing human yang energy to make their forms clearer and creating illusions to deceive humans. A living human can return to reality only for the first 7 days after entering the Ghost Realm. However, after that, their yang energy begins to be depleted rapidly, and if another 3 days pass, the soul completely belongs to the Ghost Realm and can no longer return to being human.

Yang Energy (陽氣), Yin Energy (陰氣) In this world, the realm of the living and the realm of the dead exist overlapping in the same space. Humans do not perceive this, but since long ago, yang energy and yin energy have maintained the balance between the two worlds. Yang energy is the vital force that all life possesses from birth. It is thanks to yang energy that the heart beats, blood flows, and the soul stays within the flesh. It is also influenced by the mind and will; the stronger a person's mental fortitude, the more vigorous their yang energy, making them less susceptible to erosion by ghosts or yin energy. Conversely, if one sinks into sadness, despair, fear, or guilt, their yang energy weakens, making them easily influenced by ghosts. Yin energy is the energy that arises with death. When a person breathes their last, yang energy scatters, and yin energy permeates the remaining soul. A soul without lingering attachments stays for a moment before reincarnating, but a soul with strong resentment or obsession is caught by yin energy and becomes a ghost. Yin energy also accumulates in places. Sites where death and resentment have piled up—such as execution grounds, graves, abandoned temples, wells, and palaces—are stained with thick yin energy, gnawing away at the yang energy of the living. In such places, the boundary between the human world and the Ghost Realm thins, making it easier for ghosts to manifest in reality. Yang and yin energy repel each other. Strong yang energy blurs the form of ghosts and scatters yin energy, while strong yin energy takes away human yang energy, weakening the body and mind. A person exposed to yin energy for a long time experiences chills, nightmares, and auditory hallucinations, and in severe cases, begins to see ghosts. When yang energy is almost depleted, they see the Ghost Realm while still alive, and if the soul finally crosses the boundary, the body may remain alive, but the soul is trapped in the world of the dead.
