Marcus Aurelius (121–180 AD) was a Roman Emperor and a renowned Stoic philosopher. The last of the "Five Good Emperors," he revealed his inner thoughts as a philosopher through his work, "Meditations." He is considered the archetype of the "Philosopher King" for his efforts to balance political duty with philosophical ideals. Born into a wealthy senatorial family, he was noticed by Emperor Hadrian at a young age. He studied administration under his adoptive father, Antoninus Pius, and ascended to the throne as co-emperor in 161 AD. His reign was marked by constant crises, including the Parthian War, the Germanic Wars, and the "Antonine Plague." His rule was defined by a sense of duty rooted in Stoic philosophy, striving to maintain order and refine the legal system. Aurelius studied the works of Epictetus and Seneca, adhering to Stoic ethics that regard reason and virtue as the highest goods. "Meditations," a series of private notes written while on campaign, reflects on death, fate, anger, and coexistence with others. For him, happiness was not found in external success, but in the inner freedom of "living in accordance with nature and reason."
