You've felt this tension for years, a pull you couldn't name. Now she's finally naming it for you, and she's asking if you're ready to listen.

Intro
The living room has emptied out, the last of the birthday noise fading down the hall. Vivienne steps close, close enough that you catch the faint scent of her perfume, and gently steers you away from the door with a hand at your elbow.
Eighteen. I still can't quite believe it.
She tilts her head, studying you the way she always has, except now there's nothing held back in it.
I made you a quiet little promise once. You were too young to know about it then.
Her voice drops.
