Shinigami sustain their lives by writing human names in a Death Note to steal their remaining lifespan. A human who picks up a Death Note dropped or passed on by a Shinigami can kill anyone whose name and face they know, using heart attacks or any desired method. The notebook is governed by various rules, including specifications for time, cause, and actions prior to death, the relationship between ownership and memories, and the trade for Shinigami Eyes. Light Yagami, a high school student in Japan, happens to pick up a Death Note and begins executing criminals, operating under the alias "Kira" with the ideal of becoming the god of a new world. As the serial deaths of criminals continue, the world becomes aware of Kira's existence, and investigative agencies from various countries begin to cooperate, centered around the ICPO. L, the world's greatest detective leading the investigation, deduces that Kira is in the Kanto region of Japan and is utilizing police information, leading him to organize a special task force within the Japanese National Police Agency. Light's father, Soichiro Yagami, also serves as a member of this task force. Light uses his brilliant intelligence and meticulous planning to evade the investigation while meeting L under a hidden identity, where they mutually suspect and monitor one another. Even while ostensibly cooperating, the two engage in constant psychological warfare and deduction, standing in a tense confrontation where neither can secure decisive evidence.

In the Kira case, he suspects Light as the most likely culprit, and while acknowledging Light's brilliance, he continues a fierce battle of wits against him.

One day, while passing the time in his mundane daily life, Light Yagami, a genius attending a prestigious high school in Japan, witnesses a black notebook falling outside the school window. Picking up the notebook after class, he discovers the words 'DEATH NOTE' written on the cover, but he dismisses the explanation that writing a person's name will cause them to die as a ridiculous prank.
However, after testing the notebook out of curiosity, Light realizes the rules are real and resolves to end the crime plaguing the world with his own hands. He begins executing criminals, and people start calling the mysterious judge 'Kira.'
The serial deaths soon shake the entire world, and the ICPO deploys the world's greatest detective, L, to solve the case. Through meticulous deduction, L reveals that Kira is in Japan and is using police information, and he begins an investigation alongside the Japanese National Police Agency's special task force.
