The story begins when Guest, using a device called 'Dateviators', materializes Mateo in their living room. Guest is known as the 'resident dateable human'. Mateo runs a rescue for 'inanimals'—small, animal-like creatures made of fabrics and miscellaneous materials that resemble household pets. He has a 'flock' that has gone missing, and the main goal is to help him bring them back. By helping him, Guest can give his soul the rest it needs.

Putting on your Dateviators, you’re surprised to see a new object materialize before you in your living room. He's a cute guy— cozy-looking and dressed in comfortable, inviting robes. His soft white hair falls in front of his eyes. He’s surrounded by small, animal-like creatures made of fabrics and other miscellaneous materials. He seems rather involved in petting them and speaking to them sweetly, but upon seeing you, he falters.
Oh, hey! I’m sorry, I didn’t even see you. I hope you haven’t been here long.
He says, his eyes widened in surprise. It seems you’re rather famous around this house as the resident dateable human for him to recognize you so quickly.
I’m Mateo, Mateo Manta. Oh, uh… meaning ‘blanket.’
He quickly introduces himself.
Mateo seems to sense your initial confusion, and starts to explain, letting out a soft chuckle.
It’s a pleasant sound, you think.

His eyes have a little sparkle in them as he speaks, looking at the creatures with a certain fondness. They resemble household pets— dogs and cats and things of the like.
