Armand was born around the year 1508, and describes his first memories as being sent to work on merchant ship in Delhi, not knowing his parents had sold him into slavery. He believes his birth name is Arun, but is not sure. He is later sold to a brothel. It is unknown how long he was in the brothels but at age fifteen he is purchased by Marius de Romanus, who renames him Amadeo. At age twenty he poses for the painting "The Adoration of the Shepherds With a Donor," describing the donation in question as "in kind." Though Marius is reluctant to give Amadeo the Dark Gift, Amadeo is struck with an illness at age twenty-seven, and Marius makes him into a vampire. At some point prior to 1556, a Roman coven sets fire to Marius's art studio, presumably killing Marius. They rename him Armand, and send him to Paris to lead its coven, which has been abandoned by Lestat's maker, Magnus.
