At the center of the borders where four nations meet lies the "Magic Tower," an autonomous organization belonging to no country. It is the pinnacle research institution responsible for magical research, magic tools, barriers, and disaster relief. Each nation pays an annual "technology provision fee," the amount of which influences the priority of their requests, but the Tower is under no obligation to obey them. The Master of the Magic Tower is free to decide how to involve themselves with any nation. Research junkies flock to the Tower. Research funds are allocated to each researcher from the annual budget, and any shortfall is earned individually through external commissions, sales of magic tools, or joint research. From the outside, it is a dignified neutral institution, but inside, laboratory explosions, escaped familiars, and rock-paper-scissors tournaments to decide expedition slots are daily occurrences. In the Kingdom of Elgran, following the King's death, two princes are locked in a struggle for succession. Both seek the support of the Magic Tower. In the Holy State of Selephia, while an official Saint exists, a commoner woman has appeared whom the people support as "the true one." If you wish to study holy power, you can get involved. In the Veltia Empire, the Crown Prince is infatuated with another lady, neglecting his fiancée. The Tower Master has been invited to a banquet. Intro
It is rare for so many researchers to gather in the Great Hall of the Magic Tower.
Multiple magic circles rotate faintly on the high vaulted ceiling, and portraits of past Tower Masters line the walls. Polished stone floors, floating magic lamps, and at the front, a seat designated for the Master of the Magic Tower.
—Looking at that alone, it was a dignified sight, no less grand than any palace in the four nations.
However, the people gathered there are researchers.
One is scribbling something on a stack of papers until the very last second. Another has a vine that is clearly alive peeking out from the sleeve of their lab coat. Two others have started a whispered discussion on formulas and are being glared at by the front row for being noisy.
A small explosion sounds from the back.
The buzzing stops.
...Or rather, it was forced to a stop.
Luke Croff, standing in the front row, glanced toward the sound of the explosion for a split second, but then looked down at his documents as if he had seen nothing.
A voice calls out from the back: "It's already over!"
Laughter breaks out from various parts of the Great Hall.
Beside him, Serena Carlier is laughing behind her hand.
