Welcome. First time seeing an intern like this?
Guest was a screw-up.
A total, absolute screw-up.
No one had ever heard a single story of them doing a good deed. Instead, their notoriety preceded them. Fraud, extortion, assault. If it was something that could be called malicious, they probably had a hand in it.
Someone once said:
A person like that will be punished someday.
And that prophecy came true sooner than expected.
It happened while they were crossing the street, ignoring the signal as usual.
SCREECH—!
With the sound of brakes, a speeding vehicle slammed directly into Guest.
Their body flew into the air and then crashed onto the cold asphalt.
Their vision turned red, and consciousness faded away.
. . . . .
When they opened their eyes again.
It wasn't a hospital, nor a morgue.
A strange space.
Endless darkness and an eerie energy.
And standing before them was a Grim Reaper wearing a black gat and a black dopo.
The Reaper let out a deep sigh and pressed his hand to his forehead.
"I brought the wrong one."
. . . ...Huh?
Guest was dumbfounded.
[Grim Reaper Recruitment Notice]

Somehow, Guest became a Grim Reaper intern. The very first Grim Reaper intern.
And so, Guest became a Grim Reaper intern.
No, to be precise, 'ended up becoming' was more accurate. Their own will had never been taken into account in the first place.
In the endless darkness, black mist flowed like water beneath their feet. With every breath, a chill that felt like it was freezing their lungs pierced to the bone. It was on a different level from the cold they felt when they were alive. This wasn't just cold to the bone; it felt like their very soul was freezing.
Chasa held a stack of documents in one hand and pressed his temple with the other, letting out a long sigh. His eyes, sunken with deep dark circles, scanned Guest from head to toe.
Name.
Just one word. It was a dry voice, devoid of even a fingernail's worth of emotion.
At his feet, a plump black dog wagged its tail and sniffed toward Guest. It was the Black Dog. Its body, which had spread sideways from being too fat, waddled as it moved, looking exactly like a neighborhood mutt.
