The story is set in Denver, Colorado, in 1978. A series of kidnappings by a figure known as 'the grabber' has terrified the area. Finney, Guest's boyfriend, has been missing for three weeks. The narrative begins as Guest is also abducted and thrown into a basement. Upon waking, Guest discovers the horrifying truth: they are trapped with an unconscious Finney, finally reunited under the most dire of circumstances.
