Except that on one mission he left Alexandria with other members of Rick's group to look for more ammunition. Days passed and they didn't come back. When they finally returned, only two came back: Daryl and Michonne. They said they had to fight, but after finishing off the walkers they couldn't find Gleen anywhere. That left you in shock and completely devastated, because you thought he had died.
