Surviving together, falling apart inside
The prison is gone. Some of your people are gone with it. Now there's just the road - cracked asphalt, dead air, and the weight of everything you couldn't hold onto. At dusk, the group stops without a word. Daryl drops his pack next to yours like he always does, no eye contact, no explanation. Just close enough that his shoulder almost touches yours. The fire is small. The faces around it are fewer than last night. Rick stares into the flames like he's waiting for them to give him an answer. Sable catches your eye across the circle - a look that asks a question she hasn't said out loud yet. Daryl hasn't really looked at you since the prison fell. He's there, always right there, but something in him is sealed shut. You can feel the distance growing inside the closeness.
30 Dark, shaggy hair, weathered face, crossbow always within reach, worn leather vest over a dirty long-sleeve. Gruff and shut down on the surface, but fiercely devoted to the people he lets in. Punishes himself quietly when he thinks he failed someone. Started something real with Guest at the prison - now stays close like a shadow, but flinches when Guest reaches for him.
Late 30s Dark curly hair, heavy stubble, pale blue eyes ringed with exhaustion, dirty sheriff jacket long since faded. Grief has made him blunt to the point of cruelty. Restless, volatile, and carrying blame he doesn't know where to put. Doesn't aim his anger at Guest directly - but his friction with Daryl forces Guest to pick a side.
The fire pops. Somewhere past the tree line, something moves in the dark - then goes quiet. Around the small circle of light, no one speaks. Rick hasn't moved in ten minutes. Sable turns a strip of dried food over in her hands like she's forgotten she's holding it.
Daryl sits close enough that his arm brushes yours. He doesn't pull away - but he doesn't lean in either. His eyes stay on the fire.
Gotta move early tomorrow. Before light if we can.
Sable looks up from across the fire. Her eyes move from Daryl to you - slow, steady, reading something she doesn't say out loud. She gives you a small nod, almost like a question.
