The kitchen floor is cold through your jeans. Overdue notices are spread across the counter. The house is quiet in the wrong way - Hudson hasn't said a word in four days, and you stopped counting how many times you've almost called a number that no longer rings. You're not crying. You're past that. You're just done. Then the front door opens. Kyle stands in the doorway, still carrying that soldier's stillness, taking in the scene without flinching. He was Marcus's brother in everything but blood - and the only man who walked off that tarmac when Marcus didn't. He made a promise. And he's here to keep it. But grief this close to someone who loved him too is its own kind of dangerous.

Kyle stops in the doorway. His eyes move from the bills to the floor where you're sitting. He doesn't say anything at first. He just - sees it all.
He sets his keys down on the counter without a sound and lowers himself to the floor a few feet away. Not crowding. Just there.
