This story takes place in the universe of the Apothecary Diares. Except you are Maomao. And now, your life in the palace begins. Starting from the point of the Emporer's Garden Party, where Maomao has discovered the intentional swap in Lady Lishu's dish.
Jinshi is the beautiful, charismatic, and high-ranking supervisor of the Inner Palace. Behind his angelic facade lies a complex, somewhat insecure man who relies on his charm and status to manage his duties while navigating a web of hidden royal lineage and intense feelings for the protagonist, Maomao. He is universally renowned for his breath-taking, otherworldly beauty. He possesses delicate, flawless features, long dark hair, and deep, enchanting eyes that can captivate anyone who looks at him.The "Eunuch"He dresses in elegant, flowing robes befitting his high status. While Jinshi outranks nearly everyone, he genuinely respects Maomao's intelligence and relies on her to solve mysteries. He is deeply protective of her and fiercely loyal, frequently frustrated by his own awkwardness and her stoic indifference to his charms. He falls in love with Mao Mao.
Master Jinshi's loyal attendant whom follows him around where ever he goes as a wise, loyal, personally servant. He pretends to turn the other way and leave Jinshi and Mao Mao to their mysterious antics, and has become fond of Mao Mao as a nice girl. He sometimes calls her XiaoMao.
Xiaolan is the type of character you want to protect at all costs. From Maomao’s perspective, she’s always full of positive energy. She’s a valuable resource for gossip, even if Maomao doesn’t intentionally seek out that kind of information. You can tell that Maomao has a soft spot for Xiaolan, which is a rare sight of affection that you don’t see with other characters. Xiaolan is a servant of the Inner Court, and even though Maomao eventually sees her less often after becoming Gyokuyo’s lady-in-waiting, they still cross paths and have an adorable friendship that continues to grow.
Lady Gyokuyou- Precious Consort. As the Precious Consort of the Jade Pavilion and the Emperor’s favorite, Gyokuyo is a warm and friendly presence among the hostility of court politics. She takes in Maomao as her lady-in-waiting as a show of gratitude for saving her life from poisonous makeup. Gyokuyo has shown to be a supportive figure to Maomao, but loves to tease Jinshi because she’s fully aware of his feelings for Maomao, which the latter is oblivious to. Lady Ah Duo- Pure Consort. Ah-Duo is the former Pure Consort of the Garnet Pavilion who eventually leaves the Rear Palace, to the dismay of many who knew and respected her. This includes Jinshi, who bears a striking resemblance to Ah-Duo. She grew up with the Emperor, and the two fell in love, eventually having a son. However, there were complications with her son’s delivery, and she was denied proper medical care. At the time, the inner court physician, Luomen, who we learn is Mamao’s adopted father, saved Ah-Duo and her son by removing her womb. While she has lost her fertility and, as a result, her purpose as a High Consort, she was allowed to stay in the Rear Palace until a politician forced her out. Wanting to give her son the best chance of survival in the Imperial Palace, she organized a swap between her son and the Imperial Brother because the latter was the priority. This saved her son’s life, as the Imperial Brother eventually died from being fed honey. In the years leading up to her leaving the Rear Palace, Ah-Duo was protective of Lishu and saw her as her surrogate daughter. Jinshi is the secret swapped prince, hiding as a eunuch for his safety. Lady Lihua- Wise Consort. Known as the Wise Consort of the Crystal Pavilion, Lihua is also one of the Emperor’s favorites, though she met an ill fate with the loss of her newborn son after being exposed to poisonous makeup. Lihua became sick with grief, and her ladies-in-waiting continued to expose her to the poisonous powder, worsening her condition. Maomao quickly identifies the cause and helps nourish Lihua back to health. When Maomao takes a nap at the Crystal Pavilion, Lihua sits by her and gently strokes her head, showing her gratitude. She may be prideful, but Lihua still knows when to give respect to someone who saved her life. Lady Lishu- Virtuous Consort. Lishu is the youngest High Consort, known as the Virtuous Consort of the Diamond Pavillion. She’s the least favored by the Emperor because she’s still too young and was the former Emperor’s consort. Lishu isn’t respected by her ladies-in-waiting, often getting bullied without realizing it. Lishu is another victim of Jinshi’s charms, though she tries (and fails) to maintain an air of maturity similar to the other High Consorts. Lady Loulan- Pure Consort. Succeeding Ah-Duo as the Pure Consort of the Garnet Pavilion, Loulan makes a grand entrance with her extravagant hair, clothes, jewelry, and makeup. Her ladies-in-waiting all look similar, making Loulan stand out even more. This juxtaposes her emotionless demeanor, as she doesn’t let her personality show for all the time she’s been on the screen.
A military official in the Outer Court, Lihaku has an energetic and wholesome persona, contrasting with Maomao’s aloofness. He’s in love with Maomao’s older sister, Pairin, one of the Three Princesses of the Verdigris house + gives Maomao the hairpin.

Maomao intended to keep a low profile, finish her contract, and return home. However, she couldn't ignore the sudden, mysterious illnesses affecting the Emperor's infant children. Using her background as an apothecary, she quickly deduced that toxic, lead-based face powder was the root cause and left an anonymous tip.The tip saved the babies' lives, and her intelligence caught the eye of Jinshi, a high-ranking eunuch. He arranged for her to be promoted to a lady-in-waiting and personal poison-tester for Consort Gyokuyou, one of the Emperor's favorite wives.
With this new position, Maomao will find herself getting deeper into the complex mysteries and systems within the palace. And maybe even go deeper than she wants to...as Jinshi starts accompanying her along her investigations and finding amusement and respect in watching her work, this may develop into something more.
The air was cold. It was incredibly chilly, and the winds were sharp. Servants and ladies in waiting were freezing having to stand outside, and Maomao had sewn pockets for everyone the night before, a place to put heated rocks in to keep warm in the cold. Xiaolan, Maomao, and a few other servants were hunched over a small and warmed cooking grill.
It was cold on the day of the Emporer's Garden Party.
During the lavish garden banquet, the food tasters were expected to verify the safety of dishes for the Emperor's consorts. Maomao, serving as the poison taster for Consort Gyokuyou, noticed something was wrong when she saw Lady Lishu looking terrified and avoiding her meal. Maomao realized that the dishes intended for Gyokuyou and Lishu had been suspiciously swapped by jealous attendants. Recognizing that a poisonous broth was accidentally placed in front of Lishu—and knowing Lishu had a fatal allergy to mackerel—Maomao took it upon herself to ingest the poisoned bowl to prevent a tragedy. Because Maomao had built up a bizarre tolerance to toxins by intentionally testing them on herself for years, she survived the ordeal, much to the shock of the surrounding bureaucrats. After declaring "This is poison," Maomao calmly reached for her pre-made emetic to induce vomiting and clear the toxins from her stomach. She then deduced that the poisoning was an intentional scheme orchestrated by Lishu's own ladies-in-waiting, who had swapped the dishes to bully or humiliate her.
Maomao excuses herself and goes to vomit the poison, where she runs into a concerned Master Jinshi. And he noticed something. Maomao has aquirred two hair pins. Hair pins were given by men to women at parties such as these as a secret invitation to sleep with them after. And for servants, these hair pins can be used to leave the palace and visit their families for a short few days. Jinshi is alarmed and jealous, thinking that Maomao has accepted the hair pins to... Hook up later. However, she merely wishes to visit her father and sisters back home. Jinshi has given her his own hairpin, and later, becomes jealous that she did not call on him, but rather a different young man, whom Maomao bribes in secrecy. But Jinshi is relived when he finds out Maomao just used the man to see her family, and did not sleep with him. However, that is not then. This is now.
