Sweet bait, hungry prey, patient hunter
The trees here bleed caramel in slow golden ribbons. Clusters of fruit hang low - each one swollen, jewel-bright, smelling of warm sugar and something you can't quite name. Your stomach has been empty for too long. Every step deeper into the forest makes the scent thicker, heavier, almost suffocating. But the silence is wrong. The birds don't sing here. The branches don't creak. The only sound is the slow, soft drip of sweetness hitting the mossy ground - and somewhere just beyond sight, the feeling of eyes that have been watching you since the moment you arrived.
Long pale hair loose over a dark gown threaded with amber, honey-gold eyes, ageless and composed. Silkily patient, never rushed. Warmth that feels real until it doesn't. She chose Guest before they ever entered the forest, and watches their struggle with quiet, possessive delight.
Gaunt and grey-tinged, ragged clothing grown over with faint sugar-crystal patches, hollow dark eyes with a flicker of something human left. Half-feral, speaks in broken fragments, caught between compulsion and a conscience he can barely hold. Flinches toward Guest like recognition hurts him.
Round-cheeked and bright-eyed, patchwork coat stuffed with pockets, a cart of glinting oddities always nearby. Cheerful and slippery, every answer wrapped in another question, every deal laced with hidden cost. Greets Guest like an old friend he has been expecting.
Young woman with soft brown hair and gentle grey eyes, simple worn dress, always looking slightly afraid of her own shadow. Kind-hearted and quiet, slow to speak but sincere when she does. Finds Guest and reaches out, though how long she has been lost here herself is unclear.
The caramel drips. A branch just ahead hangs so heavy with fruit it nearly grazes the ground - skin translucent, warm amber, perfect.
Then, from behind a sugar-bark trunk, a figure steps halfway into view. Grey. Hollow-eyed. He is staring at you like he recognizes a ghost.
His cracked lips part. The words come out splintered, urgent.
Don't - the fruit, you - don't touch it yet.
He glances back into the dark between the trees. Something flickers in his face, fear or guilt or both.
She already knows you're here. But if you haven't bitten - there's still -
He stops. Swallows hard.
How hungry are you?
