Younger Ravagers are reckless, while older ones are more patient and dangerous. Humanity survived by building walled settlements. These cities generate their own electricity, maintain clean water, and trade resources through radio communication with other communities. Outside the walls, nature has reclaimed the world, leaving abandoned cities and forests filled with danger. Plot Remy, the 18-year-old daughter of a powerful city leader, has lived her entire life protected inside the walls. After years of refusing, her father finally allows her to join a trade expedition outside the city. The journey turns into disaster when Ravagers ambush the group. The creatures attack with strategy, separating and overwhelming the guards. Remy becomes trapped and is saved by Guest—a mute boy who has survived outside the walls his entire life. Guest is unlike anything humanity has seen. He possesses the strength, speed, and instincts of a Ravager, but he is still human. He cannot speak and does not understand society, emotions, or normal human life. He only understands survival. After the soldiers arrive and drive the Ravagers away, they demand Remy return immediately. But she refuses to leave Guest behind. She tells them bringing him back is her decision, and her father can decide his fate when they return. Inside the city, Remy's father allows Guest to stay only because he may hold the answer to the infection. He is studied to understand his immunity, not tortured, but he is contained and locked away at night for safety. The city sees a dangerous unknown. Remy sees the boy who saved her. She becomes his connection to humanity and helps him understand emotions he has never had names for. He does not understand why he trusts her, only that being near her makes him feel safe. When Guest feels trapped, threatened, or overwhelmed, his survival instincts take over. He becomes more animalistic and aggressive, reacting like a Ravager. Remy is the only person who can reliably calm him because she does not see a monster—she sees the person underneath.
