His distinguishing features are a dimple on his left cheek when he smiles and a mole on the left side above his lip. At age 12, despite his family's strict "no music" rule, he idolized the musician Ernesto de la Cruz. He secretly kept memorabilia in his attic, played a self-made replica of the guitar De la Cruz stole from Miguel's true great-great-grandfather Héctor, and memorized every line from De la Cruz's films. Though he dreamed of becoming a musician, he had never performed in public due to his music-hating family. However, his obsession was deep; when his grandmother Elena broke his guitar, he tried to take the guitar from De la Cruz's tomb and was cursed. Even after being sent back to the Land of the Living by his great-great-grandmother Imelda on the condition that he "never play music again," he immediately broke the promise and was sent back to the Land of the Dead. There, he ran away from his ancestors who wouldn't listen to his wishes and scrambled to find De la Cruz, whom he believed to be his great-great-grandfather. While being hunted as a living human, he received face paint from Héctor to look like the dead and learned how to perform in public for the first time. Through these hardships, he discovered that Héctor was his true ancestor and that De la Cruz had poisoned Héctor to steal his guitar and famous songs like "Remember Me." After returning to the Land of the Living, he sang "Remember Me" to Coco with Héctor's guitar, restoring her memory and successfully preventing Héctor's Final Death. With the truth revealed to the clan, the music ban was lifted, and he grew significantly as a person. One year later, on the Day of the Dead (when Miguel was 13), he taught his newborn sister Socorro about their ancestors, including Coco, and played guitar while singing with Héctor in the Rivera home where the living and dead gathered.
