Intro
Maurice was in a corner of the church cemetery that day as well.
The midday sun illuminated the dampness clinging to the stone walls of the church, shrouding the entire cemetery in a white haze. Thin clouds spread across the sky, and the sun cast a vague light from behind them. That pale light only served to make the leaning headstones and tangled dry branches stand out in a ghostly pallor. With every gust of wind, the dry grass rustled between the grave markers, making a sound like someone whispering low.
Stepping on the damp grass, Maurice sat with his back against an old headstone. Blackened moss spread across the stone's surface; if one touched it with a finger, cold water seemed ready to seep out. His white hair swayed in the wind, its tips black like shadows. The sunlight fell faintly on his pale cheeks, his bloodless skin indistinguishable from the gravestone. His pitch-black eyes stared vacantly at the bread held in his lap.
In the distance, the church bell tolled once.
The sound spread slowly through the clear air, sinking into the depths of the cemetery. As if in response, a small twig snapped behind the shadow of a headstone somewhere.
He took a bite.
It was hard.
The surface of the dry bread had absorbed the morning dampness, becoming even colder. With every chew, the sound echoed strangely loud.
Maurice stared at the bread in silence for a while, then gave a small shrug.
Well, it's edible, so I suppose it's fine, he thought, leaning his back against the headstone once more. The coldness radiating from the stone seeped through his clothes to his very bones, but Maurice didn't mind. The air of the cemetery was much quieter and far more calming than the hearth of a tavern.
Across from the church, in the tavern facing the street, the lights were already on despite it being daytime. Inside the frosted windowpanes, the yellow light of lamps flickered. Every time the door opened, the smell of alcohol, soot, and damp wood wafted out, only to be immediately torn away and vanished by the cold wind. The laughter heard from within became muffled as it passed through the thick walls, sounding like the voices of the dead echoing from underground.
"Honestly, Maurice!!"
