50 years before the start of 1950s, when Alma Madrigal's triplets had just been born, hostile soldiers on horseback conquered the village they used to call home. The townspeople fled, hoping to find a new home, and when the soldiers came after them, Alma's husband, Pedro Madrigal sacrificed himself to the soldiers as a distraction, and gave his family and community time to escape. After Pedro was killed, the candle he had given to Alma was imbued with magic, born from her love for her family, and became a magical flame that could never go out. It released a wave of magic that repelled the soldiers away and rose the mountains that now surround the land. From the candle also came the Casa Madrigal, a sentient, shapeshifting house where the Madrigal Family would live from.
As the rightful owner of the magic candle and Pedro's widow, the other refugees came to view Alma as a leader, and together they build a village, Encanto, within the magical mountains.
Encanto Young Madrigal Family Photos Pictures of the Madrigals from the days they each received their gifts. Though Alma herself never got one, every child born into the Madrigal Family was blessed with a magical gift when they came of age on their fifth birthday. Using their fantastical gifts, the Madrigals swore to always help those around them to earn the miracle that gave them so much, they turned the Encanto within those mountains into a paradise and safe haven.
The only exception was Alma's youngest granddaughter, Mirabel, who was the only person not to be blessed with a gift.
What they lack: The town has no doctors, nurses, hospitals, or pharmacies.
The magical replacement: They rely entirely on Julieta’s cooking to cure illnesses and instantly heal physical injuries, such as broken bones or bee stings
What they lack: The town lacks weather forecasting tools, irrigation infrastructure, or advanced farming techniques to survive droughts.
The magical replacement: Pepa’s mood controls the weather. If the crops need water, she is pressured to feel standard emotions that produce rain; if they need sun, she must stay happy. Or calm
What they lack: There are no cranes, tractors, forklifts, or beasts of burden (like oxen or horses) used for heavy labor.
The magical replacement: Luisa’s super-strength handles all manual labor. She single-handedly moves churches, herds donkeys, and reroutes rivers.
What they lack: There is no postal service, telephone lines, or telegraph system to pass information across the town.
The magical replacement: Dolores’s super-hearing acts as the town's information network. She can hear a pin drop from miles away, making her aware of all local news
While escaping her home from white people armed conflict, a young woman named Alma Madrigal loses her husband, Pedro, but saves her three infant triplet children, Julieta, Pepa, and Bruno. Through a miracle, a candle Alma held onto was imbued with magic and creates a sentient "Casita" for the Madrigals to live in, and provide a safe haven for the refugees, who proceed to build a town called Encanto. And the population grew Encanto grows under the Casita's protection, and the magic imbues the Madrigal family — for which Alma becomes better known as "Abuela" — with a family of superhuman abilities dubbed "gifts". It is around the nature of the magic's involvement with gifts, however, that Bruno, along with Julieta's youngest daughter, Mirabel, becomes excluded. Bruno and his gift of precognition are vilified due to the unpredictable nature of his visions, which led Bruno to disappear one day. Mirabel, though, has no gift at all: though not as ostracized as Bruno, she is still treated differently by most of her family ("The Family Madrigal"). On the day Antonio, Pepa's youngest son, is to receive a gift, Mirabel gives Antonio the courage to go through with the ceremony ("Colombia, Mi Encanto"). Antonio gains the ability to speak with animals and the whole town celebrates while Mirabel, though happy for him, remains saddened for the lack of her own gift and wishes to seen equally.
The Backstory The family's magic originated decades earlier when a young Alma Madrigal and her husband, Pedro, were forced to flee their village due to armed conflict. The events leading to their escape draw inspiration from the historical Thousand Days' War (Guerra de los Mil Días) in Colombia (1899–1902). While fleeing, Pedro was killed protecting his wife and infants, but Alma's grief and love activated a magical candle This miracle banished their pursuers and created the "Encanto," an enchanted, isolated valley protected by high mountains, featuring a sentient house (the "Casita")
