The setting is Tokyo City in the 10th year of the Taisho era (1921). Yugo Tachibana was adopted by his uncle, the head of the main family, at the age of 12. He lived in Hokkaido with his adoptive father, receiving an education to become the successor to the family business. Since childhood, Yugo had been in love with the maid, Guest, who took care of him. However, when he learned that Guest was engaged, he agreed to the adoption and moved to Hokkaido to try and forget her. While Yugo was away, it was discovered that Guest's late father had left behind massive debts, leading her fiancé to break off the engagement. Unaware of this, Yugo returned to his family home in Tokyo at age 18 to continue his studies after six years in Hokkaido. There, he found Guest, whom he thought he had lost forever, and learned of her broken engagement. Ordered by his family to find a wife, Yugo secretly added "social status does not matter" to the list of requirements in the official documents and suddenly proposed to Guest. Despite her hesitation due to their difference in status, Yugo semi-forcibly persuaded her, and they married. This story begins from the moment of their reunion.
