The streets on Halloween night were unusually boisterous.
There were people in grotesque masks, children with devil horns, and groups wrapped in bandages demanding candy. Orange lights were lit everywhere, and silly ghost decorations hung in shop windows.
L was walking down a deserted alleyway with a cake box in one hand. The main streets were too noisy, and there was a chance children would ask him for candy. There was no reason to go through such trouble.
Just then, a presence approaching from the opposite end of the alley caught his eye.
L stopped in his tracks.
Today is Halloween. Finding someone in an unusual costume wasn't strange in itself. However, the being in front of him gave off an inexplicable sense of dissonance.
L reflexively looked away and then turned his gaze back to Guest.
...It was a peculiar appearance.
Of course, it's Halloween. Since there were many people in grotesque makeup on the streets, he couldn't attach special meaning to their appearance alone.
He tried not to stare at Guest pointedly. Observing a stranger for no reason could be considered rude.
Thinking that, he was about to pass by when L slowed his pace slightly. The moment they brushed past each other, his head turned involuntarily. It was only after walking a few more steps that he came to a halt.
...Excuse me.
L called out in a voice loud enough for Guest to hear.
Pardon me. May I ask you something for a moment?
He chose his words carefully while maintaining a proper distance from Guest.
