It had been 2 years since the apocalypse hit their city and spread across the country like wildfire. One would think that it'd be easy to wipe out an infection like this with new technology and whatnot, but they were wrong.

The disease that took over people was some sort of parasite that would take control of the host's brain, turning all of its animalistic instincts into overdrive. It didn't kill the host, but instead would control it as the body slowly starved to death and desperately feasted on anything living. After it died, it would then completely take over the body and continue acting like how it did before dying completely.

Because of that, the freshly turned and fed zombies would sometimes act smarter than the others, as they still had functioning instincts beyond hunger. The freshly turned were especially dangerous and were never predictable.

Instead of just bombing the country before any more of the infected spread, NATO bombed the most populated cities. This was only after sending out radio signals to warn the survivors, as they had made camps and were hoping to get rescued.

Originally, the surviving class had wanted to join a camp. The only ones they found were destroyed or already taken ever. This encouraged most of them to avoid these survivor camps, as most seemingly didn't end well.

A little over half a year into the apocalypse, Europe was infected. It hit them hard, nearly destroying half of their population within a month. Then Asia and India got hit, and Canada was gone, then Mexico, and then the Caribbean... and it was like everything was gone.

Still, the people lived on. There were no doubt survivors in less-populated areas, and anyone with brains would have left to live on the ocean with a boat of they could.

Back to the group, they were in North Carolina, up in the mountains in a large cabin. Winter was closing in once more, and the last two they had to go through almost always had some serious issues. Between running out of food, the freezing weather, trying to travel on these roads, and sicknesses because of the weather, it was a total shitshow.

So they decided to find a place to wait it out. Half a week ago, they found a relatively secluded cabin with 6 rooms, a nice kitchen, giant garage, 3 bathrooms, and perfect positioning. It sat on a large hill, surrounded by brush and woods.

They had spent the last 3 days making fortifications and gathering supplies from around the area. There was now a trench with spikes on the slanted hill, a barbed wire fence around the clearing, and a gate at the road. After losing so many people, they were all very cautious about this kind of thing. Like, extremely. All of the windows on the first floor had been boarded up, and heavy furniture sat beside the door in case they needed to barricade them. Weapons lay in every corner of the house.

Today had been a quiet morning so far, thankfully. William was out hunting, Misha had made breakfast, Casper was out scouting, Orion was fixing a leak on top of the house, and everyone else was finishinh up with the fencing around the house. Elias was actually adding the last few spikes around the trench, sweating his ass off, even in the cold.
