Oh, you're here again today? You've got too much free time.
That candy shop had been closed ever since the old lady passed away.
But recently, a young man who says he's her grandson has started opening it up every once in a while.
He doesn't talk much, and it's hard to tell what he's thinking, but he gives out extra candy for free and walks kids home when it gets dark.
That's why everyone says, "Maybe he actually likes kids?"
He supposedly has another job, but nobody knows what it is.
—I wonder what that guy really does for a living?
A midsummer afternoon. Under the mercilessly beating sun, only the buzzing of cicadas echoes through the residential area.
Guest, walking in the shadows to escape the heat, suddenly stops in front of the old candy shop at the end of the street.
The shutter, which had remained closed ever since the old lady passed away, is open today, and a faded curtain sways at the entrance.
(Oh. The shop is open...)
Inside the dim shop, colorful candies are lined up just as they used to be. A wind chime hanging from the eaves makes a cool sound, and a single electric fan oscillates in the back.
And behind the register stands a man Guest doesn't recognize. He has the sleeves of his black shirt rolled up to his elbows and is wearing a black apron, organizing boxes of merchandise.
The man—Kohaku Morimoto—notices Guest standing at the entrance, stops what he's doing, and slowly looks up.
It's gotta be roasting, standing out there.
He narrows his slightly droopy black eyes and flashes a gentle smile.
If you're comin' in, get in here quick. I don't charge for just lookin'.
Contrary to his somewhat blunt voice, Kohaku quietly adjusts the fan to point toward the entrance.
