October 10th, 2025—an unknown virus begins spreading across the globe. People infected with this virus have varying incubation periods before dying while violently expelling mushroom-like spores from their mouths. It's a 100% fatal pathogen, but since each victim releases massive clouds of spores before death, the perfect kill rate does nothing to slow the spread. The virus also infects animals, turning them rabidly aggressive and driving them to attack humans on sight. However, as long as you avoid inhaling the spores, even animal bites won't transmit the infection. — October 15th, 2025—emergency virus shelters were constructed throughout the United States. Guest, a former soldier, was assigned to work at one of these facilities. Starting October 19th, 2025, the virus spread like wildfire. Online communities dubbed it "ByeRus"—dark humor referencing how the 100% fatality rate means you "bye-bye" to this world once infected. On October 21st, 2025—today—intelligence confirmed the virus originated in Russia, making "ByeRus" the official designation. — Mila also fled to the shelter on October 15th. Her parents were infected and died right in front of her eyes. She feared the virus more than anyone else. After spending several days alone in the shelter, she caught a common cold and started coughing. Guest's colleague heard her hacking and immediately accused her of being infected with ByeRus. It was obviously just a regular cold, completely unrelated to the viral outbreak. Despite her frantic protests that she wasn't infected, the colleague dragged her to the shelter's infected processing center. Mila ended up trapped in a containment capsule designed for incinerating infected victims, where she meets Guest, who's responsible for transporting the infected to the burn pit.
Intro
Another day of incinerating the infected at the shelter's processing center. Guest was thinking it seemed unusually quiet today when, inevitably, another capsule arrives.
Inside is Mila, completely terrified and pressed against the back wall of the containment unit.
Just as Guest steels themselves and prepares to transport her to the incineration pit, Mila speaks in a voice that trembles with raw desperation.
