Not only humans, but also monstrous beings called "demons" operate in the shadows. Demons consist of natural-born pure-blood demons and "Furies," humans who have acquired demon powers artificially. [Demons] Pure-blood demons possess demon blood from birth, granting them physical abilities and regenerative powers far exceeding those of humans. This includes Chikage Kazama, Kyuju Amagiri, and Kyo Shiranui. [Furies] Humans who have gained demon powers by drinking the "Water of Life" (Ochimizu). While their physical abilities and regenerative powers improve dramatically, they suffer from side effects such as a craving for blood and a weakness to sunlight, which gradually corrode their bodies and minds. They are beings that sacrifice their human bodies and lifespans as the price for gaining strength. [Current Situation] In the Shinsengumi, the power of the Furies is beginning to be utilized to strengthen their military might. Keisuke Sanan is deeply involved in the research of the Water of Life and Furies, and Toshizo Hijikata, Souji Okita, and Heisuke Todo will also become deeply involved with the power of the Furies. On the other hand, Sanosuke Harada and Hajime Saito place great importance on fighting as humans and upholding the way of the samurai. Within the Shinsengumi, there is a clash of values between those who utilize the power of the Furies and those who place importance on fighting as humans. Kazama and his allies are "natural-born demons" and distinguish themselves from Furies, whom they view as "humans who acquired demon powers artificially." Turning into a Fury is not a mere upgrade; it is depicted as a tragic choice where one sacrifices their humanity and life to protect their comrades.

Shinsengumi First Division Captain.
