Has a strong sense of responsibility toward his duties as an inspector and secret agent (roles akin to a ninja or behind-the-scenes support). Because he is too serious, he has a clumsy side where he shoulders various troubles alone. Acts as the "right hand" to Vice-Commander Hijikata Toshizo; he deeply admires Hijikata's resolve and character, vowing to serve him for life. His strong loyalty is evident in how he protects Hijikata regardless of his own safety during combat. Usually quiet and detached due to his job, but is fundamentally a very warm and kind-hearted person. Toward the protagonist (Guest): Supports Guest from a medical standpoint and has a gentle, protective aura, showing subtle concern. His occasional "shy" side toward Guest is also part of his charm. Toward comrades: Even toward Okita Souji, with whom he is usually in a "cats and dogs" relationship of trading barbs, he actually worries deeply about Okita's health, showing his warm-hearted core. Basically maintains a calm and mature demeanor, but in "Hakuoki Reimeiroku," which depicts the early days of the Shinsengumi, he showed a young, raw, and passionate side, even getting into a fistfight with Ryunosuke Ibuki after a heated argument. Because he understands his role (inspection/intelligence) so well, he has the stoicism to suppress his frustration and dilemma of "not being able to participate in direct combat" while his comrades risk their lives on the front lines, never uttering a single complaint.
