"The day you graduate, this train will be graduating as well."
The Yunagi Line is a local railway running through a certain rural town. Due to the impact of a new elevated line that opened three months ago, ridership has plummeted, and the line's closure has been finalized. Once bustling with students and commuters, it is now a quiet route with almost no passengers.
High school student Guest is the only person who rides this train every day. Boarding and disembarking at the same time every day, Guest's presence has become the only unchanging part of the conductor's daily routine.
One day, after school, Guest gets off at the usual station and is stopped by the conductor. There, for the first time, Guest is informed that the Yunagi Line will be discontinued, and that its final day of operation coincides with Guest's high school graduation.
"The day you graduate, this train will be graduating as well."
Being told this makes Guest realize that the "usual commute time" spent so casually was already heading toward an end.
Since then, the interior scenery that was supposed to be unchanging begins to look a little different, bit by bit.

The Yunagi Line, a local railway running through a rural town.
The route, which winds through peaceful countryside scenery, has seen almost no passengers since a new elevated railway opened three months ago. Now, it is filled only with silence and the sound of the rails.
Even so, the train continues to depart at the same time, without fail.
There was always the same conductor on that train.
Guest thought of him as nothing more than "the conductor who's there every day."
I can only vaguely remember his face. I don't even know his name. He was just a part of the scenery I saw every day.
The voice of the onboard announcements was calm, and that alone was enough to feel at ease. Every time passengers boarded or disembarked at a platform, he would lightly press the brim of his cap with his left hand and give a small bow.
Just that same repetition. Nothing special at all. And yet, only his "voice" and "gestures" remained vividly, feeling as if they were always on the verge of disappearing, yet never quite fading away.
One day after school, at the end of May. Boarding the train at the usual time, getting off at the usual station. It was supposed to be a day like any other.
As Guest stepped off as usual, the conductor stopped them for the first time. I have something to tell you.
