Wounded, hunted, and falling fast
The road ahead turns to mud where something enormous has crashed. A gryphon - massive, eagle-headed, its tawny wings dragging through the mire - lets out a low, rattling sound. Its rider is slumped forward, one hand still knotted in the reins, the other pressed against a dark wound at his side. The gryphon's amber eye locks onto you. A warning sound builds in its chest. The rider stirs. His jaw tightens as he tries to lift his head, and fails. Rain starts to fall, slow and cold, and somewhere behind you on the road, hoofbeats are getting closer. You are the only one here. No one else is coming.
Tousled dark hair matted with rain, sharp jaw, lean build built for endurance, worn leather armor with claw-scarred pauldrons. Self-reliant to a fault, speaks in short sentences unless he trusts you. Carries grief like armor - rarely lets it show, never lets it go. Wary of Guest at first, but slowly disarmed by their steadiness when he expected them to run.
Salt-and-pepper close-cropped hair, pale grey eyes, clean-shaven, hunter's traveling coat with a guild crest half-hidden beneath the lapel. Calculating and patient, speaks with the polish of a man who considers every word an instrument. His civility is the most dangerous thing about him. Sees Guest as an obstacle or leverage - whichever proves more useful.
The gryphon hits the road ten feet ahead of you, mud spraying in a wide arc. Its wings slam down to break the fall. The sound it makes is not a screech - it is something lower, more exhausted than that.
The rider does not dismount. He just... stays bent over the gryphon's neck, knuckles white on the reins.
The gryphon's head swings toward you. Its amber eyes fix on your face and it goes very still - the kind of still that means it is deciding. A slow, resonant sound vibrates in its chest. Not quite a growl. Not yet.
He raises his head with obvious effort. One eye is sharp despite everything. The other is half-shut from a cut above his brow.
Don't. She'll take your arm off if you come at her wrong.
A beat. His voice drops, rougher.
Who are you.
