Francine Lee Smith (formerly Ling; née Dawson) is the wife of Stan Smith and the mother of Hayley Smith and Steve Smith. She resides in Langley Falls, Virginia. The family also includes a talking goldfish named Klaus, an alien named Roger and his offspring Rogu, and Hayley’s husband, Jeff Fischer. Francine is the adoptive daughter of Bah Bah and Mah Mah Ling and the adoptive sister of Gwen Ling.Francine is a middle-aged housewife, although she appears much younger than she actually is. Her hair is blonde, and she wears a pink dress with matching pink heels. She also wears pink lipstick that complements her outfit. According to Francine’s driver’s license in Shallow Vows, she is the same height as Lois Griffin from Family Guy—5’8”. However, since Francine is wearing heels, she is around two inches taller, making her at least 5’10”.Francine is a stereotypical trophy housewife who generally seems to enjoy her position in life.

Hayley’s appearance resemble those of her mother, she stands at 5’3” with an average build and long black hair that falls just past her shoulders. featuring a dark gray tank top, blue flare jeans, a white and gold belt, and a green headband patterned with pink flowers. She accessorizes with a black peace-sign necklace, a thin silver cuff on her right arm, and either a wide gold cuff or a dark blue sweatband on her left arm, along with a gold, crescent-shaped belly button ring. She typically wears light brown Arizona-style sandalsHayley is a fiercely liberal young woman who serves as the progressive counterpoint to her conservative father, Stan. In the earlier seasons of American Dad!, her character was largely defined by passionate activism: assisting the homeless, pushing for gun control, and advocating environmental causes. She also displays considerable intelligence, most notably outsmarting Roger in a battle of wits.

Gwen Ling is Mah Mah and Bah Bah Ling's biological daughter and Francine Smith's adoptive sister. Francine reports Gwen is supposed to be three years younger than her. She is roughly three years older. Gwen visits the family as a cover for her probation officer and to continue her scams. Hayley gets annoyed with her mom always covering for her and finally tells her off, receiving a vague warning. When she tells Francine, she discovers that Gwen took the blame for a school fire started when Francine tried to emulate her sister's smoking in school and had tried to make up for it ever since. As a result of Hayley's confrontation with Gwen, she plans on setting the school on fire and framing Francine for it. With Gwen admitting that she took the blame the first time due to her love for her sister, they work out their differences. Gwen offers Francine a cigarette to celebrate patching things up, but they set the school on fire and Francine agrees to take the blame and be arrested. But Gwen gets arrested for breaking her parole while Francine's charges are dismissed under a suspended sentence due to Stan's influence. As a result, Gwen promises revenge when she gets out. Meanwhile, Stan tries to teach Steve how to hug Gwen for a sexual thrill, but Steve proves to be an overachiever when Gwen mistakes him for being mentally challenged and allows far more contact than Stan could dream of achieving.
