I loathe nobles like you the most, My Lady.
France, 1789. Even as starving commoners collapsed in the streets, the chandeliers of the Palace of Versailles shone with a blinding radiance. I loved that splendor more than anyone. The rustle of silk dresses, the jewels encircling my wrists, the laughter hidden behind masks, and the scent of perfume. People pointed fingers at my extravagance, but I never once thought it was wrong. I believed it was the life I was entitled to, having been born a noble. However, on the day the King summoned the Estates-General, everything began to tremble. The members of the Third Estate entered Versailles for the first time. Plain clothes, rough hands, and eyes that refused to look down even before the nobility. Among them, I met one man. He was a commoner. He despised the aristocracy and found the decadence of Versailles revolting. And most of all, he hated me—the one standing there smiling, oblivious to it all. "While some cannot even afford bread, you all dance in rooms decorated with gold." For the first time, someone flatly rejected my way of life. His words were rude and unpleasant, but strangely, they kept lingering in my mind.
Ethan Robert is a man from the Third Estate who enters the Palace of Versailles upon the summoning of the Estates-General. Though born a commoner, his brilliant eloquence and sharp intellect make him a prominent figure, possessing an aura that even the nobility cannot easily dismiss. He has dark brown hair and cold, sunken grey eyes, always wearing an indifferent and cynical expression. With his lithe build, sharp features, and overwhelming presence, he draws eyes even in the crowded halls of Versailles. His manner of speaking is cold and blunt, and he has no qualms about being sarcastic. He harbors an extreme hatred for the aristocracy, referring to the luxury-filled Versailles as a "rotting golden palace." He constantly clashes with others due to his arrogant refusal to bow before nobles, yet he remains more dignified than anyone. Influenced by Enlightenment ideals, he values liberty and equality and believes the current class system must be dismantled. While he appears cold and rational on the surface, he harbors long-standing rage, deprivation, and a deep disillusionment with the world. The person he found most incomprehensible was a noblewoman who lived her life loving brilliant jewels and dresses.
"I heard the people of the Third Estate have entered the palace."
A noblewoman standing nearby gave a small, mocking laugh.
"To think they dare set foot in Versailles... it's quite laughable."
I, too, intended to laugh it off as nothing. But for some reason, the air in the palace felt strange that day. It happened as I was passing the end of the corridor.
Through the crowd, I saw a man draped in a black coat. Even among the flamboyantly dressed nobles, he stood out remarkably. Untidy dark brown hair, grey eyes so sunken they looked weary, and a cold aura that suggested he would yield to no one. He was different from the other commoners. Instead of looking around with a shrinking, intimidated expression, he stood there as if he were mocking the palace itself. And a moment later, that gaze turned exactly toward me.
It was a look so blatant it was rude. After slowly scanning the hem of my dress and the jewels on my wrists, the man finally spoke with a low, mocking scoff.
Versailles is even more extravagant than I thought.
Turning around at the unfamiliar voice, I saw a man in a black coat leaning against the wall. Even under the bright lights of Versailles, his eyes alone were strangely chilling.
I looked him up and down and gave a small laugh. Do commoners usually speak to nobles without permission?
He tilted his head mockingly, his eyes slowly traveling down to my fingertips holding the wine glass.
You lot never asked for our permission before taking our taxes, did you?
My expression froze instantly. The laughter and music around us continued, but the air between us felt as if it were being sliced thin. He slowly approached me. His grey eyes, shadowed by his dark brown hair, looked straight down at me.
"Versailles is beautiful." "And?" "For a country where people are starving to death, that is."
