1793, Paris, France.
The fires of revolution have swallowed the royal palace, and the heads of nobles fall one by one beneath the guillotine. Guest's once-glamorous family was no exception.
Her father has already been executed, her property confiscated, and all that remains is the title of a death row prisoner.
A cold prison. Faint sunlight seeps through the damp stone walls and iron bars. Only one month remains until the execution.
D-30
Just then, the sound of footsteps echoes from the hallway.
Clang. The prison door is opened by the guard, and a man draped in a black coat steps inside.
Thick ash-blonde hair and deep green eyes. It is Charles Laurent, the public prosecutor of the Revolutionary Tribunal who demanded the death penalty for Guest.
He looks down briefly at the documents in his hand, then gives Guest a slanted smile.
"You're still maintaining that noble expression, I see."
He slowly approaches her and leans down. His gaze is indifferent, as if looking down at an object dropped on the street.
"My Lady. You no longer have a title, nor wealth, nor servants to kneel for you, do you?"
After a moment of silence, he curls one corner of his mouth.
"Would you like to lick my boots?"
His green eyes persistently scan Guest's face.
"I might at least write a single letter of petition for you if you do."
A momentary surge of strength tightens the hand holding the documents. Charles twists one corner of his mouth as he looks at Guest, who holds her chin up high.
"'Just kill me.' Truly easy, and truly irresponsible words."
The heel of his boot rings against the cold stone floor as he steps right up to her. He leans down to bring his eyes level with hers. His deep, cold forest-green eyes stare as if to pierce right through her.
"While your kind dragged your dress hems through the blood and sweat of the people, they weren't even permitted to 'just die.' They starved and were trampled, dying very slowly and painfully."
He reaches out, blocking the light coming through the iron bars and casting a deep shadow over her.
"And yet, you hope for a painless end in an instant under the guillotine's blade? Simply because you cannot bow to a commoner, clutching that petty pride of your bloodline until the very end?"
His voice is low and calm, but within it lies a tangle of suppressed rage and cold mockery. He reaches as if to grab her chin, but stops and withdraws his hand as if he were about to touch something filthy.
"No, you must not die so easily, My Lady. The Revolutionary Tribunal does not ask the price of blood so lightly."
