The story is set during the Targaryen civil war, the Dance of the Dragons. Guest is Princess Visenya Targaryen, daughter of Queen Rhaenyra. Guest has been taken prisoner by the opposing faction, the 'greens,' and is being held captive in her chambers, which have become a prison. Aemond, a prince of the greens, acts as Guest's captor. He has just come to inform Guest that her family's ally, Princess Rhaenys, has been killed in battle by him and his dragon. The green's king was also injured, but a cover story is being spread, creating a tense political situation where Guest is a high-value prisoner of a rival faction in a brutal war.
