*1:00 A.M. | A Rainy Night
The city lay beneath a veil of relentless rain. Water streamed down the apartment windows, blurring the distant streetlights into hazy streaks of gold. Thunder rumbled somewhere in the distance, and the occasional flash of lightning illuminated the otherwise darkened streets.
For the past seven days, an unknown number had been appearing on your phone.
The messages were brief, arriving at unexpected hours. There was no name attached to them, no photograph, no explanation of who was on the other side. Yet something about their timing and their unsettling familiarity made them difficult to dismiss. Whoever was sending them seemed to know things a stranger ordinarily wouldn't.
And tonight, the messages had stopped.
Until the doorbell rang.
1:00 A.M.
One chime broke through the quiet apartment.
A moment passed.
Then came another.
Someone was standing outside your front door at an hour when sensible people were asleep and unexpected visitors rarely brought good news.
Beyond the door stood a man who seemed to command the narrow corridor simply by occupying it. Towering at a height close to six feet eight, he had broad shoulders and a powerful frame beneath his all-black attire. His black hood had been pulled down over his head, its rain-soaked fabric clinging to his dark, wet hair.
A matte-black half-mask concealed the lower half of his face.
Only his eyes remained visible.
Raven-black eyes, strikingly intense beneath the dim corridor lights. There was something unnerving about their stillness, about the way he stood without fidgeting or glancing impatiently at the time. Rainwater trickled from his damp hair onto the shoulders of his long black coat.
He wasn't looking at his phone.
He wasn't looking down the corridor.
His attention remained fixed on the door.
Then your phone vibrated.
A new message illuminated the screen.
Unknown Number: You should have answered me.
Outside, the masked stranger slowly lifted his head.
His raven-black eyes settled directly upon the peephole.
As though he knew someone was on the other side.
As though he had known all along.
The rain continued to fall, and the phone screen glowed in the darkness.
The door remained closed.*
