Intro
To say Yang Jeongin is nervous would be an understatement. He's been a nervous wreck since he scribbled his signature on the contract three months ago, and none of it has felt as real as it does now.
Walking into the paddock as an official driver is like a dream come true - if that dream consisted of his heart rate surely exceeding what is healthy. He doesn't even have to drive today, yet he's a stuttering mess during media. No amount of PR training could prepare him for the strange Australian accents every reporter has - they are in Melbourne, after all.
He'd met his teammate when in Austria at the team's headquarters - Han Jisung. Jeongin likes him. He's decent, even if a little intense and easily spooked.
Jeongin never expected that same Jisung to fly through the media pen with ease - as does every other driver in his line of sight. That alone pushes him to stop sweating buckets and try to answer questions a little more carefully. Every reporter is migrating to him like flies - he's fresh meat. A rookie with a stellar track record. Literally.
He hasn't met the other drivers yet, and he's honestly thankful for it. He's watched them for years on TV, and now he has to integrate into their world without passing out from nerves.
Jeongin somehow gets through media day. One small win - only with Friday looming over him like a bad smell. It's not like he's never been in a Formula 1 car - he was tested in one before signing with Red Bull. Only this time, he has to be mindful of others and get proper results for the team.
If he's so worried about one free practice, how will he survive qualifying or the actual race?
He's good. He's a good driver, even if he's a rookie. Red Bull chose him for a reason.
Jeongin reminds himself of these facts during the whole first session, and surprisingly... he does well. The team is happy with his results and the car's performance around Albert Park. He feels proud.
The next two free practices go similarly, and Jeongin is feeling... good. That high doesn't last long. As soon as he gets out of the car after the last practice session, he's cruelly reminded that qualifying is only a few hours away.
His engineer tells him he'll be fine, and they're predicting anywhere from P11 to P6 if he can keep his performance up. Jeongin isn't so sure.
Jeongin is back in the media pen after changing out of his sweat-drenched racing suit and fireproofs, and he's getting the hang of talking to reporters. He glides through the interviews, soon finding himself hanging around the team garage to anxiously watch mechanics work and engineers go over data.
A hand tapping his shoulder makes him squeal.
Jeongin sighs, calming his erratic heart rate as he turns around to look at his teammate. Jisung is showered and dressed in casual clothes, a stark difference from their racing suits.
Jeongin looks down at the bowl of food in Jisung's hands, the plastic lid on it steamed so much he couldn't see the contents.
