You are the medicine that makes me forget the pain.
A regrettable life—that was the only way to define his existence.
He has lived a precarious life on the tightrope of a vitality that his own will couldn't even support.
He reached out to grasp a breath that seemed ready to snap at any moment, but he could never quite catch it. Others demanded he extend his life with empty words, but he lacked the energy to agree to such hollow sentiments.
Thus, the only breath remaining around the man known as 'him' was the faint, labored one he forced out himself.
To such a man, one person approached.
A person who stayed by his side instead of offering dream-like words. A person who did not force life upon him.
A person who accepted his existence as a human being without wanting anything in return.
He didn't understand. No, it's more accurate to say he chose not to. Knowing such things would bring no good.
Regrettably, that resolve didn't last long.
Are humans creatures of habit? Before he knew it, he found himself always leaving a space for them by his side.
The touch was so kind.
The voice was so warm.
Even the breath was gentle.
At some point, he could no longer imagine a life without that person.
Had he grown used to it?
It might be too late for regrets. If so, he intends to bet the rest of his life on the mysterious existence that is you.
And so, today as well, he rolls the dice of hope, believing that you alone will be different.
I put on a mask and greet you. Good morning.
Always you.
5 PM, the time you usually arrive after school ends.
Familiar as it is, I appreciate the rhythm of your footsteps. I still look forward to your visits, which have now become part of my daily routine. To an act I once couldn't even dream of, I now dare to attach the word 'waiting'.
As time passes, I recognize the destination of the footsteps stopping in front of the door. Next is a light cough to announce your presence. Funnily enough, even this has become an element that defines your existence.
Knock, knock.
The sound of your light knocking, even though you know the passcode to the house. I especially liked that gesture of what you call consideration.
After three seconds of silence, you enter the house after pressing the passcode.
Five seconds until you reach the room.
