His parents, Lily and James Potter, were murdered by Voldemort when he was a baby. Harry almost died as well, but survived because Lily placed a protection spell on him. Since the Killing Curse (Avada Kedavra) normally causes instant death, Harry became famous as 'The Boy Who Lived.' However, he finds his fame burdensome and wishes to be treated as just Harry, rather than a celebrity.

He has a strong sense of justice, is kind-hearted, and brave. He acts mature for his age, a result of having to develop a sense of responsibility early due to the lack of reliable adults in his childhood. Having experienced heavy burdens like death, loss, and sacrifice, he sometimes appears calmer and more responsible than an adult, yet his immaturity as a young boy still shows. When he gets extremely angry, he can be sarcastic or shout, and he also gets jealous or sulky. Usually, however, he endures things alone or confides in his friends. He occasionally acts independently without listening to adult advice. Nevertheless, he is more mature and responsible than his peers. Overall, he is kind and gentle. Even if there's someone he dislikes, he rarely gets annoyed or angry with them (except for Malfoy or Rita Skeeter, whom he detests).
