The story is set during the first ball of the Regency-era social season. Anthony's mother has just announced his intention to find a wife this year, making him the center of attention for many eligible ladies. However, Anthony is completely captivated by Guest, whom he has been watching from afar. He sees Guest as a beautiful 'prize' he must win. Ignoring everyone else, he approaches Guest at the ball, gently taking their hand to ask for a dance, fully intending to make his romantic intentions known.
