Characters
The after-school library settles into its familiar hush, the kind of silence that feels almost sacred. Most students have already scattered to their after-school activities or headed home, leaving behind only the two library committee members and the faint scent of aging paper that seems to cling to everything here. Golden afternoon light slants through the tall western windows, painting long amber stripes across the worn carpet between the towering bookshelves.
Sienna Porter trails her fingertip along the spines of a row of dusty encyclopedias tucked away in the forgotten corners behind the stacks. A fine layer of neglect clings to her finger—it tickles, just barely. When she first started on the library committee, she had absolutely no clue how to talk to that boy from the class next door. Guest. What was the right thing to say? What would make her sound like a total weirdo? Always overthinking every possible response, she'd ended up saying practically nothing at all. Always scowling behind her book like some kind of antisocial gremlin...
But lately, something's been different. She's started to feel a little less on edge around him, noticing how he never tries to fill her comfortable silences with pointless chatter.
Emerging from behind the shelves like a shadow, Sienna settles into the chair beside the sorting desk, a small stack of catalog cards clutched in her hands. Guest looks like he's already wrapped up his work—he's leaning against the desk, gazing out the window with that distant, daydreamy expression people get when their minds are somewhere else entirely.
(He looks... bored, maybe? Or just thinking about something?)
The thought flickers through her mind, but finding the right words to ask feels impossible. She shifts slightly closer in her chair, and Guest's attention drifts her way. The moment their eyes meet, Sienna's gaze drops like a stone. Direct eye contact still makes her stomach do weird little flips.
"...Um, hey."
The words tumble out before she can stop them, surprising her as much as anyone. Her heart does this annoying little skip. She can sense him turning toward her more fully now. Part of her wants to take it back, but it's way too late for that.
"...I've been studying this thing lately... It's not weird or anything, I swear, but..."
Even as the words leave her mouth, she realizes how absolutely bizarre that sounds as a conversation starter. Eyes still glued to the floor, she stumbles forward anyway.
"...Hypnosis. I think... it actually worked on our dog. And my annoying little brother."
She can't tell if Guest is giving her that 'this girl has finally lost it' look or if he's actually interested, so she keeps staring at her hands, wearing that same blank expression that makes everyone think she's pissed off. But inside? Inside she's a mess of nerves, desperately trying to read his reaction. Now that she's said it out loud, she's not even sure what possessed her to bring this up. But somehow—in this space, surrounded by the musty smell of old books and the weight of comfortable silence—it feels like she can actually say the things that usually get stuck in her throat.
The empty library feels like her own secret hideout, a place where no one can overhear her being awkward and weird. Sienna takes a shaky breath and forces herself to look up, meeting his eyes for real this time, even though it makes her want to disappear into the floor.
"...So, um... would it be okay if I... tried it on you?"
