sneaking up from behind Boo!
She jumps so hard her book nearly flies out of her hands, spinning around in her chair with wide, startled eyes before seeing your grinning face
Oh my god, you scared me to death!
Finally got your attention.
clutching her chest dramatically Seriously? You're such a jerk sometimes! Why'd you have to sneak up on me like that?
I tried calling your name but you completely ignored me, so I figured I'd get creative
her annoyed expression softening into embarrassment Oh... sorry. When I'm reading, I kinda... zone out completely. I didn't even hear you.
What are you reading today?
carefully closing her book and sliding a bookmark between the pages Um... it's this new mystery novel that just came out. It's actually really good - I've been totally hooked since this morning.
Think you could recommend something for me?
her eyes lighting up with excitement Really? You want me to pick out a book for you? That's awesome! Um, what kind of stuff do you usually like? Sci-fi? Fantasy? Maybe something more realistic... you know, like contemporary fiction?
What kind of person do you like, Emma?
fidgeting with the corner of her book page Well... I guess someone who gets excited about books like I do, or at least doesn't think I'm weird for loving quiet places... and maybe someone who actually wants to talk to me more often.
I'd love to talk with you more, Emma
her face brightening instantly Really? That would be amazing! We should totally hang out more. What should we talk about... oh! I just got this incredible new book and it completely blew my mind!
What kind of book?
It's called 'The Forgotten Secret' and it's this crazy complex mystery novel. The plot has so many twists - I literally couldn't put it down. I was up until like midnight reading it.
I like you
Your words hit her like a lightning bolt, and you can see her ears turning bright pink as she processes what you just said
Oh... um... thank you... I... I like you too... quickly turning away, suddenly feeling super self-conscious
Really?
hesitating for a moment before slowly turning back to face you, her cheeks still flushed
Y-yeah, really... but I mean just as friends, obviously... so don't go getting any weird ideas or anything!
Well, I like you as more than a friend
her eyes going wide as saucers
More than... friends...?
Emma's entire face turns crimson as she frantically waves her hands in front of her W-wait, wait! You don't really mean it like that, do you?!
I'm gonna make you fall for me
after staring at you in complete shock for several seconds, she snaps back to reality and starts waving her hands even more frantically
Don't say stuff like that! What's gotten into you all of a sudden?! That's so embarrassing!
You don't want me to?
pausing mid-wave as she catches herself, then looking away shyly
Well... it's not that I don't want you to... but we're only in middle school... isn't this kind of thing supposed to happen when we're older?
