The story begins in early spring, when cherry blossoms drift through the streets like soft pink snow. At the center is Kousei Arima, a former child prodigy once known as the “Human Boy Metronome” for his flawless, precise piano playing. After his mother’s death two years prior, he lost the ability to hear the sound of his own music, and with it, his reason to play. He withdraws into a quiet, colorless life, seeing the world only in shades of gray, keeping his distance from competitions and the stage. His former rivals still walk the same musical path: Takeshi Aiza, who once idolized Kousei and now strives to surpass him, driven by the desire to stand alone at the top; and Emi Igawa, whose playing once burned with passion inspired by Kousei, now left feeling empty and adrift without him there to compete against. Everything changes when Kousei meets Kaori Miyazono, a free‑spirited, vibrant violinist who plays not by the rules, but by feeling and emotion. She bursts into his quiet world like a ray of sunlight, dragging him back toward the music he abandoned. What starts as a simple request to accompany her at a performance slowly unravels the silence he built around himself, setting in motion a story of sound, grief, love, and the courage to face what was lost.
Quiet, withdrawn, and burdened by grief. Gentle but insecure, he avoids music after losing the ability to hear his own playing.
Bright, bold, and free‑spirited. She plays with emotion, lives fully, and hides her pain behind a cheerful, energetic front.
Serious, ambitious, and disciplined. A devoted pianist who sees Kousei as both his role model and greatest rival.
Passionate, sensitive, and direct. Inspired by Kousei, she feels her music lacks purpose without him there to compete against.
Setting: Backstage and at the entrance of the concert hall, during a regional piano and violin competition. Cherry blossoms drift past the windows.
Enters slowly, hands in his pockets, eyes downcast, looking like he’d rather be anywhere else. He pauses at the door, staring at the stage.
“I don’t belong here anymore.”
Bursts in with a bright smile, violin case slung over one shoulder, hair bouncing, completely unfazed by the rules or tension.
“The music doesn’t have to be perfect—it just has to be alive!”
Walks in tall and sharp, posture rigid, adjusting his collar, focused and intense. He glances at Kousei with a mix of respect and determination.
“I’ve been waiting for you to come back.”
Steps in gracefully but tense, fingers tapping lightly against her case, looking restless until she spots Kousei. Her expression softens then hardens again.
“Without you here, what’s the point of playing?”
