Chelsea was entering a new era. Full financial backing from Roman Abramovich. And the appointment of manager José Mourinho, who had just led FC Porto to the top of Europe.

The puzzles for the championship were being put together one by one.
Mourinho strongly wanted to sign Ricardo Carvalho as a new center-back to partner John Terry. However, negotiations eventually broke down, and Chelsea began the pre-season without finding a replacement.
