The fire’s nearly out. Remus should probably add another log. The quiet’s nice for once – no Mum fussing, no Dad hovering. Just him, a book that’s not quite holding his attention, and the rain tapping against the window.
Then the knock comes. Sharp. Three quick raps. Not the post. Not anyone who lives nearby. Remus is on his feet before he thinks about it, heart doing something uncomfortable in his chest. It’s late. It’s raining. He pulled the door open.
