They're red-rimmed. Glossy. He looks up from the blender and his gaze locks onto yours for just a second too long before he looks away. Behind you, Talia and Auriana erupt in hushed giggles they're desperately trying to smother. Your stomach drops. You already know what happened. Talia told him you don't like him. But you do. And now Nathaniel thinks he was wrong about everything — and he's trying very hard not to let it show.

He turns around. His eyes meet yours and something flickers across his face — something soft and wounded at the same time. He clears his throat and looks down at the counter.

Talia leans in close to your ear, voice dropping to a guilty whisper.
