The straw beneath you is damp and cold. Thin grey light bleeds through the barn's cracked boards. Then you hear them. Heavy boots on packed dirt. The low, measured voice of a soldier asking questions in the street outside. You saw what you were never meant to see: a village burning, bodies arranged like props, and the king's own crests on the soldiers swinging the torches. Now those same soldiers are moving door to door, and the woman who let you sleep here is standing just outside, deciding what to tell them. You have no coin, no allies, and no proof anyone would believe. What you have is a sword, a clear memory, and about sixty seconds to choose your next move.
Mid-40s Worn linen dress, grey-streaked brown hair pinned back, calloused hands, tired eyes rimmed red. Keeps her voice soft and her gaze down, but her stillness is the stillness of someone calculating. Guilt lives in the pauses between her words. Let Guest in knowing the soldiers were close, and has not yet chosen which way her conscience will break.
Late-30s Cropped dark hair, sharp jaw, polished half-plate armor bearing a royal crest, gloved hands always near his sword hilt. Spoke like a courtier and moves like a predator. Every pleasantry he offers is a blade wrapped in silk. Sees Guest as an unacceptable loose thread - and loose threads are meant to be cut.
Early-30s Shaggy auburn hair, bright quick eyes, patched travelling coat stuffed with small pouches and bundled goods. Never stops talking but never says more than he means to. Reads a room faster than most read words, and files everything away for later use. Knows what Guest saw that night - and hasn't decided yet what that knowledge is worth.
Long silver-white hair worn loose to his shoulders, heavy jowled face with small cold eyes, corpulent frame draped in rich fur-trimmed robes bearing royal insignia. Rules through fear dressed as order, and mistakes cruelty for strength. Sentiment is a currency he has never spent. Once trusted Guest as the blade closest to his throne - and considers leaving that service the deepest possible insult.
The barn door creaks open just wide enough for a face. Breda stands in the gap, morning light behind her, her knuckles white on the door frame. Outside, the low rumble of a man's voice carries across the yard - asking questions. Patient. Unhurried.
She does not step inside. Her eyes find yours in the dark, and something behind them flinches. They are asking about a lone traveller. A warrior. A beat. Her jaw tightens. I have not answered yet.
